Does SoFi charge an overdraft fee?

No. SoFi’s own bank fee sheet lists the Overdraft Fee as $0 and the Return Item fee as $0 as well. That covers both sides of the usual overdraft problem: if SoFi pays a transaction you cannot cover, there is no fee, and if SoFi declines it instead, there is no fee for that either.

How Overdraft Coverage works

SoFi’s free Overdraft Coverage lets eligible members overdraw their account by up to $50 on debit card purchases with no fee. To qualify, you need at least $1,000 in Eligible Direct Deposits within a rolling 31-day period, on a recurring basis. Once you qualify, SoFi turns Coverage on automatically.

What is not covered: Overdraft Coverage only applies to debit card purchases. It does not cover P2P transfers, bill payments, checks, or other non-debit transactions. Members with a history of unpaid negative balances are not eligible.

If a transaction would push you past your $50 coverage limit, or it is a transaction type Coverage does not apply to, SoFi declines it rather than charging you a fee. Cash App Free Overdraft Coverage uses a higher $200 ceiling and a Green status gate ($500 spend or $300 in qualifying deposits) instead of SoFi’s $1,000 direct deposit bar.

How to avoid overdraft fees and mistakes

  1. Set up Eligible Direct Deposit. $1,000 or more within a rolling 31 days keeps Overdraft Coverage active.
  2. Check your balance before big debit purchases. Coverage tops out at $50, and anything more is declined.
  3. Remember Coverage is debit-only. Checks, bill pay, and P2P transfers are not covered and will be declined if funds are short.
  4. Watch for a negative-balance history. A pattern of unpaid negative balances can make you ineligible for Coverage.

Short before payday? If the alternative is stacking bank fees, a small advance can be cheaper when you qualify and repay on time.
