Does Schwab charge an overdraft fee?

No. Schwab’s checking page states plainly that Investor Checking has no monthly service fees and no overdraft fees. That has been Schwab’s position for years, and it remains the same as of this update.

How Schwab handles a shortfall

Schwab Bank Investor Checking is required to be linked to a Schwab One brokerage account. If a transaction would overdraw your checking balance, Schwab can move cash held in that linked brokerage account over to cover it. Cash moved between the accounts is generally available in seconds during business hours, or by the next business day outside business hours.

If there is no cash to move: the transaction is declined. Since Schwab does not charge an overdraft fee, there is no fee either way, whether the transaction is covered or turned down.

Investor Checking is only available as a linked account alongside a Schwab One brokerage account. The brokerage account itself has no minimum balance requirement and does not need to be funded when you open checking, but if you want Schwab’s automatic cash transfers to actually cover an overdraft, you need money sitting in that linked account.

How to avoid overdraft fees and mistakes

  1. Keep some cash in your linked Schwab One account. That is what Schwab draws on to cover a shortfall.
  2. Check your available balance before a big purchase, since a decline is still the outcome if there is nothing to transfer.
  3. Set up direct deposit so incoming pay lands before scheduled bills go out.
  4. Use the Schwab mobile app’s balance alerts to catch a low balance early.

Short before payday? If the alternative is stacking bank fees, a small advance can be cheaper when you qualify and repay on time.
