Bethpage is now FourLeaf
Bethpage Federal Credit Union, the largest credit union in the Northeast, rebranded as FourLeaf Federal Credit Union starting in early 2025. It is the same institution, same charter, same membership base, just a new name and logo. If you are searching for Bethpage’s overdraft policy, the figures below are current under the FourLeaf name.
How FourLeaf’s Courtesy Pay works
Courtesy Pay is FourLeaf’s standard overdraft practice. After your checking account has been open 6 months, FourLeaf may pay checks, recurring debit card payments, and other transactions made using your checking account number into overdraft. The fee is $30 for a check or other account-number transaction, and $10 for a recurring debit card payment. Everyday (one-time) debit card purchases are only covered if you opt in, also at $10. Covered transactions of $20 or less do not get a Courtesy Pay fee.
The daily fee cap
FourLeaf limits fees to one per day for each of three categories: Insufficient Funds Charge, Uncollected Funds Charge, and Point of Sale Courtesy Pay Usage Fee. Combined, that is a maximum of $70 per account per day.
ATM withdrawals and Online Bill Pay
FourLeaf does not authorize ATM withdrawals or FourLeaf Online Banking Bill Pay into overdraft. If available funds are short, those requests are declined.
How FourLeaf FCU compares to the average U.S. bank
Bankrate’s 2025 checking account and ATM fee study found the average overdraft fee across U.S. banks is $26.77 and the average NSF (non-sufficient funds) fee is $16.82. 61% of accounts surveyed still charge an overdraft fee at all, and 66% offer some kind of grace period or no-fee cushion before charging one.
| Category | FourLeaf FCU |
|---|---|
| Overdraft fee vs. $26.77 average | $30 on checks/account-number items; $10 on debit Courtesy Pay. Check fee is near the $26.77 average |
| NSF fee vs. $16.82 average | Combined into the Courtesy Pay structure |
How to avoid overdraft fees and mistakes
- Stay under the $20 no-fee threshold when you can, on checks, recurring debit, and everyday debit.
- Skip the everyday debit card opt-in if you would rather have a purchase declined than pay $10.
- Link a FourLeaf savings account for Overdraft Protection, a separate service from Courtesy Pay.
- Watch your Total Balance, not just Available Balance, since a sufficient Total Balance can avoid a fee even when Available Balance looks negative.
