How much is USAA’s overdraft fee? USAA charges a $29 overdraft fee, but only once per business day per account, and only if you end the day overdrawn by more than $100. Items of $5 or less never trigger a fee, ATM and one-time debit card purchases are not covered by Standard Overdraft (so they simply decline), and USAA currently does not charge a separate NSF fee for declined items.

How much is USAA’s overdraft fee?

USAA charges $29 for each item it pays that overdraws your account under Standard Overdraft. No matter how many items overdraw you in one day, USAA will not charge more than one $29 fee per business day, per account. That caps a bad day at $29, which is lower than what many large banks allow.

The Overdraft Fee Cushion

USAA will not charge you anything if your account ends the business day overdrawn by $100 or less. This cushion applies automatically, and it was raised from $50 to $100 in a recent update to USAA’s account agreement. USAA also never charges a fee for a single transaction of $5 or less, no matter your overall balance.

Quick math: end the day $100 negative or better and there is no fee. Go past $100 negative and a $29 fee can apply, unless you use the refund window below.

The Overdraft Fee Refund Window

If you do get charged, USAA gives you a chance to undo it. Bring your account balance to at least -$100 (not counting the fee itself) by the end of the next business day, and USAA refunds the overdraft fee. There is no limit to how many times you can use this refund.

ATM withdrawals and one-time debit card purchases

Standard Overdraft at USAA does not cover ATM withdrawals or one-time (non-recurring) debit card purchases. If you do not have enough available balance for one of these, USAA declines it instead of paying it and charging a fee. Checks, recurring debit charges, and ACH payments work differently and can still be paid into overdraft.

Does USAA charge a returned-item (NSF) fee?

USAA’s current support pages state it does not charge a separate NSF fee when a transaction is declined or returned unpaid, though the merchant or biller you were paying might charge you their own fee for the failed payment. Note that USAA has previously charged NSF fees under older account terms, and a resubmitted payment can sometimes trigger more than one attempt in the same day, so it is worth watching your statement closely if you regularly write checks.

Auto-Decline: the no-fee-ever setting

If you would rather never pay an overdraft fee and are fine having a purchase declined instead, you can switch your account to Auto-Decline any time from your account summary. With Auto-Decline on, USAA returns or declines most payments you cannot cover, and you avoid the $29 fee entirely.

Overdraft Protection transfers

You can link a USAA checking, savings, or credit card account to cover a shortfall automatically. Transfers from a linked USAA deposit account are free, though savings transfers count against that account’s six-per-cycle withdrawal limit. If you link a USAA credit card, USAA requests a cash advance in $100 increments, which carries that card’s normal cash-advance interest rate.

How to avoid overdraft fees and mistakes

  1. Stay inside the $100 cushion. As long as you end the day $100 or less negative, there is no fee.
  2. Use the refund window. If you slip past $100 negative, deposit enough to reach -$100 or better by the end of the next business day.
  3. Turn on Auto-Decline if you would rather have a purchase declined than risk a $29 fee.
  4. Set up low-balance alerts in the USAA app so you know before a transaction pushes you negative.
  5. Link a savings account or credit card for Overdraft Protection transfers instead of relying on Standard Overdraft.

Short before payday? If the alternative is stacking bank fees, a small advance can be cheaper when you qualify and repay on time.

Compare cash advance apps that can cover a shortfall. If you keep landing in overdraft, an app that fronts you a small amount until payday may cost less than repeat bank fees.
