How Old National Bank’s overdraft fee works

Old National charges a Paid NSF/Overdraft Item fee of $36 for each item that overdraws your account by more than $25, capped at 2 fees per day. This comes through Overdraft Courtesy, a service included automatically on most Old National checking accounts that costs nothing unless you actually use it.

The $25 cushion

Old National will not charge the $36 fee unless your account becomes overdrawn by more than $25. Staying within that $25 window on a tight day means no fee applies. Old National also states directly that it does not charge an NSF fee for items it declines or returns unpaid, only for items it actually pays into overdraft.

The extended negative balance fee

If your account stays overdrawn by more than $25 for 7 or more consecutive business days, Old National begins charging a separate $7 Daily Overdraft fee for each business day the account remains overdrawn, starting on day 7, for up to 5 additional business days.

Overdraft Protection

You can link another Old National checking, savings, or money market account, or a line of credit, to your checking account. If a transaction would overdraw the account, Old National transfers exactly the amount needed from the linked account, at no charge for personal accounts (business analysis accounts pay $5 per transfer). Items not fully covered by the linked account’s available balance may still be paid or returned at the bank’s discretion, with normal overdraft fees applying to any uncovered portion.

How Old National Bank compares to the average U.S. bank

Bankrate’s 2025 checking account and ATM fee study found the average overdraft fee across U.S. banks is $26.77 and the average NSF (non-sufficient funds) fee is $16.82. 61% of accounts surveyed still charge an overdraft fee at all, and 66% offer some kind of grace period or no-fee cushion before charging one.
