Fees verified August 30, 2026 from UMB’s Personal Checking Accounts page and UMB Consumer Banking Schedule of Service Fees and Charges (effective July 14, 2025). This is UMB Bank, N.A. (umb.com), not United Mississippi Bank.
How UMB Bank’s overdraft fee works
UMB charges a $36 Overdraft Charge for each check, draft, in-person withdrawal, or electronic payment transaction it pays into overdraft, limited to four charges per day. Debit card transactions are excluded from Overdraft Charges. The fee schedule also lists Insufficient Funds Charge as no charge.
The $5 cushion
UMB will not charge the $36 fee unless paying the item would cause the current balance to be overdrawn by more than $5.
Debit card purchases are not paid into overdraft
UMB’s fee schedule says Overdraft Charges apply to covered transaction types “but not debit card transactions.” If your available balance cannot cover a debit card purchase, UMB declines it rather than paying it into overdraft under that charge.
Overdraft protection options
UMB offers a Consumer Overdraft Protection Line of Credit at $10 per advance for overdrafts greater than $5 (plus interest under the credit agreement). Credit Card Overdraft Protection costs 3% of the advance for overdrafts greater than $5, with a $10 minimum and $25 maximum. Account-to-account transfer overdraft protection has no fee. UMB Check-Free Banking is marketed as a checkless account without the worry of overdraft charges.
How UMB Bank compares to the average U.S. bank
Bankrate’s 2025 checking account and ATM fee study found the average overdraft fee across U.S. banks is $26.77 and the average NSF (non-sufficient funds) fee is $16.82. 61% of accounts surveyed still charge an overdraft fee at all, and 66% offer some kind of grace period or no-fee cushion before charging one.
| Category | UMB Bank |
|---|---|
| Overdraft fee vs. $26.77 average | $36 per item, above the $26.77 average |
| NSF fee vs. $16.82 average | $0 Insufficient Funds Charge on the fee schedule |
How to avoid overdraft fees and mistakes
- Stay inside the $5 cushion on checks and electronic payments to avoid the fee.
- Remember debit card purchases are not paid into overdraft under the Overdraft Charge, so a shortfall there declines.
- Link a savings account for free account-to-account overdraft protection when you qualify.
- Consider the Overdraft Protection Line of Credit for a $10 advance fee instead of the $36 overdraft charge, if approved.
Short before payday? If the alternative is stacking bank fees, a small advance can be cheaper when you qualify and repay on time.
