|---|---|
| Overdraft fee | $0. No overdraft fee on the current checking messaging |
| Returned-item (NSF) fee | $0 when a payment is declined |
| Auto-Decline | Transactions that would overdraw are generally declined |
| Free Savings Transfer | Optional automatic transfer from a linked savings account |
| No-fee overdraft | May pay some shortfalls with no fee if you regularly deposit at least $250 in two of the previous three calendar months |
| Ownership | Discover merged into Capital One, N.A. on May 18, 2025 |
Fees and merger status verified September 2, 2026 from Capital One’s acquisition completion notice, Discover online banking, and the current checking account page (Capital One 360 Checking messaging).
Is Discover now part of Capital One?
Yes. Capital One completed its acquisition of Discover on May 18, 2025. Discover’s own banking FAQ states Discover merged into Capital One and that the company operates under Capital One, N.A. At closing, Capital One said customer accounts stayed the same until customers get notice of changes. Discover banking pages now point people toward Capital One checking, savings, and CDs.
Does Discover still charge $0 for overdrafts?
Yes on the current banking messaging. Checking is described with no monthly fees, no minimums, and no overdraft fees. If a payment would put you below $0 and you have not set up coverage, the default path is to decline the item rather than charge a bank overdraft fee.
Overdraft options on the current checking page
The live Discover checking surface lists three options:
- Auto-Decline: Capital One generally declines transactions that would overdraw the account.
- Free Savings Transfer: Automatic transfer from a linked savings account to cover a shortfall.
- No-fee overdraft: Capital One may pay some checks, ACH, and recurring debit items that overdraw the account with no fee. Everyday debit and ATM coverage is optional. To qualify, you must regularly deposit at least $250 during two of the previous three calendar months. New accounts wait until that deposit pattern is met.
If Capital One pays an overdraft item, you still need to deposit enough to cover the negative balance promptly.
How to stay out of trouble during the transition
- Watch for Capital One notices by email or mail before your login path changes.
- Keep a linked savings buffer if you use Free Savings Transfer.
- Maintain qualifying deposits if you rely on no-fee overdraft.
- Check balances before ATM withdrawals, which are easier to decline when funds are short.
- Read the Capital One 360 guide once your account is on Capital One’s platform.
Short before payday? If the alternative is stacking bank fees, a small advance can be cheaper when you qualify and repay on time.
