Updated November 2026.
When your Dave ExtraCash account goes negative and you can’t cover it, Dave will try to pull the balance from your linked bank account automatically. Dave ExtraCash is an overdraft on a demand deposit account at Coastal Community Bank. The repayment rules work differently from a traditional loan.
The short answer: Dave will retry the debit until it clears. They can also use money in your Dave Checking Account to cover the negative balance. Dave’s ExtraCash Account Agreement (last updated July 1, 2026) does not say Dave reports the balance to credit bureaus, and it does not mention selling the debt to a third-party collector. But the balance stays a legal obligation until you pay it back. Read the general pattern at what happens if you don’t pay back a cash advance.
How Dave Gets Repaid
Dave ExtraCash works through a feature called Balance Settlement. Here is how it works, based on the Coastal ExtraCash Account Agreement retrieved November 6, 2026:
- ACH or debit card. When your ExtraCash Account goes negative, Balance Settlement tries to pull from your linked bank account using the debit card attached to that account, or via ACH if the debit card fails.
- Timing. Dave initiates the transfer “on the date we estimate you will receive your next ongoing deposit into your Primary Settlement Account.” If no regular deposit is detected, Dave tries on the first or second Friday after the account goes negative.
- It retries automatically. If the first attempt fails, Dave “will reattempt the transfer on the next date we detect that you have sufficient funds in any one of your Settlement Accounts.”
- It cannot be cancelled. The agreement states: “This transfer(s) cannot be cancelled.” If you need to stop a debit you believe is wrong, contact Dave support immediately. The agreement does not prevent you from disputing an error, but the authorized settlement transfer itself is automatic.
- Right of set-off. The agreement also grants Dave’s banking partner (Coastal Community Bank) the right to take funds from your Dave Checking Account or other Dave accounts to cover any negative ExtraCash balance.
- Fee. Dave’s ExtraCash agreement says fees are disclosed in the Fee Schedule in the app and again before you take an advance. Dave’s public homepage states an overdraft fee equal to the greater of $5 or 5% of the advance. Confirm the number shown in the app before you borrow.
What You Can Do This Week
- Contact Dave now. Reach Dave at support@dave.com or through the in-app chat (call 1-844-857-3283 for urgent account issues). Ask if there is any way to arrange a different settlement date. Dave’s terms do not describe a formal hardship extension, but asking in writing creates a record and may lead to a workable solution.
- Do not try to open a new ExtraCash advance to pay the old one. ExtraCash is an overdraft on a demand deposit account. While the balance is negative you cannot draw additional ExtraCash against that same account. Using new borrowed money to pay old borrowed money just extends the problem anyway.
- Check your linked account balance. Balance Settlement will pull when it detects funds. If you are expecting a paycheck, it may come out the same day. Know your timing.
- Understand revoking ACH on this account is complicated. You can revoke an ACH authorization under Regulation E. See how to revoke an ACH authorization for the general process. But revoking does not erase the debt. Dave’s agreement says the balance is “payable immediately upon demand” and that the right of set-off still applies. If you revoke and then funds come into your Dave Checking Account, Dave can still apply those funds to the negative ExtraCash balance. Talk to Dave first before revoking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Dave sue me if I don’t repay ExtraCash?
Dave’s ExtraCash Account Agreement does not say they will sue you for non-payment of an ExtraCash advance. The agreement focuses on Balance Settlement retries and the right of set-off against your Dave accounts. The agreement includes an arbitration clause covering disputes, but it does not describe a collections or litigation path for unpaid ExtraCash balances. If you are concerned about this, ask Dave in writing what their policy is. Their terms are publicly posted at dave.com/extra-cash-coastal/.
Does Dave report ExtraCash to credit bureaus?
Dave’s Coastal ExtraCash Account Agreement (retrieved November 6, 2026) does not say the ExtraCash balance is reported to credit bureaus. Dave’s separate Credit Builder product does report to credit agencies, but that is a different product. If you need certainty, ask Dave directly in writing so you have a documented answer.
Can I revoke the ACH debit on my Dave ExtraCash account?
You have federal rights under Regulation E to revoke an ACH authorization by notifying your bank. See how to revoke an ACH authorization for steps. But revoking does not erase the debt. Dave’s right of set-off allows them to apply funds from your Dave Checking Account to the negative ExtraCash balance even if you revoke the external ACH. The balance stays owed.
What if I close my Dave account while I still owe ExtraCash?
Dave’s agreement is clear on this: “We reserve the right to refuse your request if you have a negative balance on your ExtraCash Account and you shall remain obligated to return your Available Balance to zero.” Closing the app or canceling the membership does not eliminate the debt. Dave can also close the account for you if the balance stays negative for 60 or more calendar days, but the obligation to repay still stands.
Can I get an extension on my Dave ExtraCash repayment?
Dave’s ExtraCash Account Agreement does not describe a formal extension option. Balance Settlement runs automatically based on when Dave detects funds in your linked accounts. Contact Dave at support@dave.com or in-app chat to explain your situation and ask if any arrangement can be made. Put the request in writing and save the response.
