How Golden 1’s overdraft fee works

Golden 1 charges $14.00 each time it pays a transaction that overdraws your account under Courtesy Pay. The credit union caps those fees at four per day. Courtesy Pay is discretionary. Golden 1 can refuse to pay an overdraft even when your account is in good standing.

The $5 cushion

Golden 1 will not charge a Courtesy Pay fee on any transaction that uses $5.00 or less of Courtesy Pay. This is a per-transaction cushion, not a once-a-day balance check.

ATM and everyday debit card transactions

Golden 1 does not authorize ATM withdrawals or everyday debit card purchases into overdraft unless you opt in. Without opting in, those transactions are declined at no Golden 1 fee. Checks, automatic bill payments, and ACH can still be paid under Standard Courtesy Pay without that debit opt-in.

How to avoid Golden 1 overdraft fees

  1. Stay under the $5 per-transaction cushion when you can.
  2. Skip the debit and ATM opt-in if you would rather have a purchase declined than pay $14.
  3. Set account alerts in Golden 1 online or mobile banking.
  4. Ask about linking a savings account for overdraft protection transfers, which can cost less than Courtesy Pay.
