PayPal has no overdraft feature and charges no overdraft fee. What happens when your balance runs short depends on which part of PayPal you are using.
Your PayPal balance, the PayPal Debit Card, and a linked bank account each work differently when funds run short.
PayPal Debit Card: declined, not overdrawn
The PayPal Debit Card draws only from your PayPal balance. If the balance is too low, the card is declined. There is no overdraft and no fee from PayPal.
One common surprise: gas stations place a temporary hold on your card before they know the final amount. That hold can cause a decline even when you have a few dollars left. PayPal’s help center recommends either paying the cashier inside for a set amount or keeping a higher balance when you fill up. For more on how those authorization holds work, see our guide on gas pump holds.
Spending from your PayPal balance
When you send money or pay online using your PayPal balance, PayPal checks your available funds. If the balance is short, PayPal can pull from a backup payment method on your account, such as a linked bank account or card. This can happen without a separate prompt.
If PayPal uses your linked bank as a backup and the bank later returns the charge, your PayPal balance can drop below zero. PayPal does not add an overdraft fee. But your bank might charge its own fee for the returned item.
Linked bank account as the funding source
If you fund a PayPal payment directly from a linked bank account, the money comes from your bank. PayPal sends the payment in real time, but banks can take 2 to 5 business days to actually clear the charge.
If your bank account does not have enough to cover it, here is what can happen:
- Your bank may charge you a returned-payment fee (sometimes called an NSF or overdraft fee)
- PayPal may apply a backup payment method to cover the payment
- Your PayPal balance can go negative if the bank rejects the charge after PayPal already sent the funds
PayPal does not charge an overdraft fee in any of these cases. Any fee is set by your bank.
Can your PayPal balance go negative?
Yes. This happens when PayPal sends a payment and the bank later returns the charge. The amount PayPal already sent gets pulled from your balance, pushing it below zero.
To fix it, log into PayPal and tap “Resolve Negative Balance.” You can add money from a card or bank to bring it back to zero. If a negative balance goes unresolved for more than 120 days, PayPal may limit or lock your account. If it stays negative for a long time, PayPal says it may send the debt to a collection agency, and that agency may charge a fee.
What to check before a big payment
Before a large PayPal payment, check:
- Your PayPal balance (tap Accounts in the app)
- Which payment method is set as preferred (Wallet in the app)
- Whether your linked bank has enough to cover the full amount
How Venmo compares
Venmo works the same basic way. The Venmo debit card declines when the balance runs out, and Venmo charges no overdraft fee of its own. A linked bank can still charge its own fee if a payment is returned. See Venmo overdraft rules for the full breakdown.

Frequently asked questions
Can you overdraft PayPal?
PayPal does not offer an overdraft feature. If your PayPal balance is short, the app either declines the payment or uses a backup payment method on your account. PayPal does not charge an overdraft fee.
Can you overdraft a PayPal Debit Card?
No. The PayPal Debit Card only uses money available in your PayPal balance. If the balance is too low, the card is declined. There is no overdraft and no fee from PayPal.
Will PayPal overdraft my bank account?
PayPal can send a payment using your linked bank account as the funding source. If your bank account does not have enough, your bank may return the charge and add its own fee. PayPal does not control that fee.
Does PayPal charge an overdraft fee?
No. PayPal does not charge an overdraft fee. If a bank payment is returned and your PayPal balance goes negative, you owe the negative amount to PayPal, but PayPal adds no overdraft fee on top.
Can I go negative on PayPal?
Yes. Your PayPal balance can go negative if PayPal sent a payment and your bank later rejected the charge. Log into PayPal and use “Resolve Negative Balance” to pay it off. Leaving it unresolved for more than 120 days can get your account limited. A long unpaid balance can be sent to a collection agency, which may charge its own fee.
