How Flagstar’s overdraft fee works
Flagstar’s current standard overdraft coverage, Overdraft Protection Coverage, charges $30 for each overdraft it pays, up to a maximum of 3 fees ($90) in a single day. This applies across most Flagstar checking accounts that offer overdraft coverage.
The $10 cushion
Flagstar will not charge an overdraft fee if your account balance is overdrawn by $10 or less after each transaction posts. If a transaction is returned unpaid instead of being paid into overdraft, Flagstar does not charge an NSF fee, though the merchant or biller you were trying to pay might charge their own late or returned-payment fee.
Flagstar One Checking: zero overdraft fees
Flagstar also offers Flagstar One Checking, a checkless account that charges no overdraft fees at all, on any transaction type. If avoiding overdraft fees entirely matters more to you than check-writing ability, this is Flagstar’s fee-free option.
Legacy Bounce Protection
Some Flagstar customers may still have an older Bounce Protection product with different terms than the current $30 Overdraft Protection Coverage. Check your disclosure or ask Flagstar which program applies to your account.
How Flagstar Bank compares to the average U.S. bank
Bankrate’s 2025 checking account and ATM fee study found the average overdraft fee across U.S. banks is $26.77 and the average NSF (non-sufficient funds) fee is $16.82. 61% of accounts surveyed still charge an overdraft fee at all, and 66% offer some kind of grace period or no-fee cushion before charging one.
| Category | Flagstar Bank |
|---|---|
| Overdraft fee vs. $26.77 average | $30 per item, close to the $26.77 average |
| NSF fee vs. $16.82 average | $0, well below the $16.82 average |
How to avoid overdraft fees and mistakes
- Stay inside the $10 cushion to avoid the fee on small overages.
- Skip the debit/ATM opt-in if you would rather have a purchase declined than pay $30.
- Consider Flagstar One Checking if you want an account with no overdraft fees at all.
- Link a savings or second checking account for free Overdraft Protection with Linked Accounts before Flagstar pays an overdraft.
