How much is U.S. Bank’s overdraft fee?
On Smartly Checking, U.S. Bank charges $36 for each paid overdraft item of $5.01 or more. Items of $5.00 or less do not get that fee. The bank will charge at most 3 Overdraft Paid Fees in one day, so the most you can pay in a single day is $108.
The $50 end-of-day buffer
U.S. Bank will not charge an Overdraft Paid Fee if your account is overdrawn by $50.00 or less at the end of the business day.
Overdraft Fee Forgiven
If fees are charged, U.S. Bank may still waive them under Overdraft Fee Forgiven. The rule: your Available Balance must be $0 or more when the bank reviews it at 11 p.m. Eastern Time on the business day the fee was charged.
Does U.S. Bank charge a separate NSF fee?
The Consumer Pricing Information we checked lists the Overdraft Paid Fee but does not list a separate NSF or returned-item fee amount. We are not treating that silence as a confirmed $0.
Overdraft protection transfers on Smartly Checking
Many U.S. Bank accounts can pay up to $12.50 for a transfer from a linked credit account. On Smartly Checking that transfer fee is waived.
ATM and debit card overdrafts
ATM withdrawals and everyday debit purchases are paid into overdraft only if you opt in. If you do not opt in, those charges are typically declined when you do not have the money.
How to avoid U.S. Bank overdraft fees
- Stay inside the $50 buffer when you can.
- Watch small items. A $5-or-under item does not get the $36 fee.
- Use Fee Forgiven on purpose. Get Available Balance to $0 or more before the 11 p.m. ET review.
- Rely on Smartly’s waived transfer fee if you link protection the bank supports.
- Skip ATM and debit opt-in if you would rather see a decline than a $36 fee.
Short before payday? A $36 bank fee can cost more than a small advance when you qualify and repay on time.

Compare cash advance apps that can cover a shortfall. If you keep landing in overdraft, an app that fronts you a small amount until payday may cost less than repeat bank fees.
